About the Role
Role
The Religious Educator works to ensure that children and their families are provided with opportunities to grow in their relationship to Unitarian Universalism. Primarily a teaching role, the Religious Educator will also mentor/train volunteer teachers and communicate with parents and LCUUC staff. This position is expected to work closely with ministerial and lay leadership. This position requires availability to be onsite at LCUUC for approximately 3 Sundays per month during the ten months from (Sept - June). There will be additional set up time required in August 2026 with flexible scheduling.
Oversight and Classification
The Lead Religious Educator is supervised by the Director of Family Ministry and is considered an hourly professional position with expected reimbursement of $20-22 per hour depending on experience.
Responsibilities
Teach a limited age religious exploration class with parent volunteer assistants (target ages 4-7) using a defined curriculum developed by the UUA or other UU congregations. The vision for the 2026-2027 year is that we will follow a Montessori-style curriculum which incorporates UU-centered stories with a prepared classroom environment.
Prepare classroom for weekly religious education by creating inventory of available materials and recommending replacements, additions or replenishments (August 2026).
Substitute in other age classrooms on occasion during the church year to accommodate weekly needs.
Assist in ages religious exploration activities on occasional Sundays with parent volunteers.
Support volunteers, students and parents in establishing and adhering to classroom practices.
Communicate classroom attendance, class summary and concerns about children, parents or volunteer teachers with the Director of Family Ministry.
Attend available developmental events or trainings as agreed up with the Minister (at LCUUC expense).
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
Prior experience teaching children ages 4-8 required.
Certification as a teacher (any level) in the state of Wisconsin or as a Montessori educator or assistant preferred. Some religious education experience desired.
Strong interpersonal relationship skills, with the ability to manage groups of children and relate to parents and colleagues.
Agree to a criminal background check
Available to work on 3 Sundays per month from 9 am to 12 pm and to prepare Spirit Play classroom works and stories (September - June).
Experience with or genuine curiosity about Unitarian Universalism preferred
