About the Role

Role

The Director of Family Ministry provides professional leadership and classroom teaching for a family ministry program that offers children’s Religious Education (RE) and additional programming for youth and families. Primarily a hands-on teaching role, the DFM will also communicate with parents and LCUUC staff and work with other area UU churches. This position is expected to work closely with ministerial and lay leadership. This position requires availability to be onsite at LCUUC for approximately 3 Sundays per month during the ten months from Sept - June and for 3-4 hours on the first Friday of every month for family programming. The position requires some onsite hours during the week to coordinate with the minister and other staff, timing flexible.



Oversight and Classification

The Director of Family Ministry is supervised by the Senior Minister and is considered an hourly professional position with expected reimbursement of approximately $25-27 per hour.



Duties and Responsibilities:

Collaborate with LCUUC Family Ministry Committee on setting program goals, budgeting, implementing the safe congregations policy and choosing curricula and activities for children and youth.

Teach a class on Sundays when the religious education is in session (generally will be elementary school-aged children).

Recruit, train, and support teachers and volunteers. Supervise and evaluate volunteer teachers and staff.

Manage the volunteer and staff schedule to ensure coverage for Sunday mornings and other events where childcare is requested.

Attend Family Ministry committee meetings and staff meetings to provide input and feedback.

Manage the budget for Family Ministry, including supplies, materials/curricula, snacks, and staffing for the program.

Internally and externally communicate the goals and activities of the Family Ministry through relevant vehicles of information sharing including being a welcoming presence prior to the beginning of Sunday services.

Collaborate with other staff, teams and the Board to best integrate Family Ministry into the life of the Church. In particular, work with the Worship Team to coordinate children’s religious education schedule with the Worship schedule, plan for intergenerational and special services, and align themes with Worship when practical.

Keep and organize necessary records, including expenses, class attendance, teacher and volunteers attendance at training, supplies, and curricula/materials.

Network with DREs from area churches and the Central Midwest LREDA or similar groups.

Attend relevant professional development events (if possible at least one per year, budget permitting).

Facilitate twice monthly youth group meetings on Sunday mornings following Sunday worship.

Facilitate First Friday Family nights from September - June, incorporating light programming (e.g. games, movies, youth discussion) for youth, children and their parents/guardians.

Coordinate with Waukesha County UU churches about available youth and family programming opportunities.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or relevant experience.   

  • Teaching or mentoring experience with children and/or youth. 

  • Commitment to actively supporting a family RE program that encourages equity and inclusion through its learning experiences. 

  • Experience as an attendee of religious education programming desired. 

  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills, with the ability to manage groups of children and relate to parents and colleagues. 

  • Agree to a criminal background check 

  • Available to work on 3 Sundays per month from 9 am to 12 pm and to prepare and attend Friday night family activities once per month. 

  • Experience with or genuine curiosity about Unitarian Universalism
