Lake Country UU Church also has a similar arrangement with Amazon.com for books:
New Orleans, Audio CD, 2005.
New Orleans has a long musical history and the new Putumayo collection New
Orleans captures the ambiance of this city where jazz was born. The musical traditions
that New Orleans has nurtured are legendary, but music is not just the stuff of legend there.
In the city’s streets, it is a vibrant, ever-evolving art form. New artists regularly learn from their
predecessors, and inject those lessons with fresh energy and ideas. Artists include Kermit Ruffins, Nicholas Payton,
Louis prima, Duke Dejan, Topsy Chapman and the Pros, Kevin Clark and the Jazz Revelation,
Louis Armstrong, Dr. John, Dr. Michael White, Deacon John, and Greg Stafford.
Mississippi Blues, Audio CD, 2002.
This collection succeeds admirably in its attempt to represent the
Mississippi, the river of blues. This deep, wide, multihued collection of blues combines an expansive
chronological and stylistic sweep with a commendable attention to entertainment value through its
emphasis on the unexpected. Artists include Luther Allison, Junior Wells, Arthur Big BoyCrudup, Artie White,
Ike & Tina Turner, Bobby Bland, Mississippi John Hurt, Chris Thomas King, John Lee Hooker, Memphis Minnie,
and Memphis Slim.

Ma, Meyer, and O'Connor - Appalachia Waltz, Audio CD, 1996. Used as prelude music before some of LCUUC's Sunday services,
this album attracts a lot of interest, with it's classical instrumentation, of
traditional American melodies. Very listenable and meditative.

Habib Koite & Bamada - Ya Ma, Audio CD, 1999. Guitarist Habib Koite is the biggest pop star of the west African nation of Mali.
His music reflects the diverse musical traditions of his homeland while being connected
his cosmopolitan life experiences. His singing style is restrained and intimate,
with varying cadenced rhythms and melodies.
Also available is the 1999 Putumayo collection:
Africa,
which includes the song "Wassiye" by Habib Koite & Bamada.

The Nakai Quartet - Kokopelli's Cafe, Audio CD, 1996. Since his first release in 1983, Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai has used the
traditional Native American flute in new musical settings. In Kokopelli's Cafe, Nakai
continues this musical journey by joining the sound of the cedar flute with sax, guitar,
bass, keyboards and drums in a confluence of traditional Native American sounds and jazz.
Also available is the Nakai Quartet's 1998 release:
Big Medicine,
and their 2000 release:
Ancient Future.

Nguyen Le - Three Trios, Audio CD, 1997. Nguyen Le is a self-taught jazz guitarist whose compositions blend the sounds
of his parents' Vietnamese culture and his own western upbringing. His fusion
jazz guitar work is reminescent of John McLaughlin, although not as frantic.
This music is definitely cool. Nguyen Le himself says, "For a long time, I had dreamt of a band
mixing jazz musicians with Vietnamese traditional musicians, playing a music
inspired by the songs my mother used to sing to me. Born in Paris from
Vietnamese parents, I lost the Vietnamese language when I began school".
Also available is the Nguyen Le's 1996 release:
Tales from Viet-Nam.

Putumayo Presents "Women of Spirit", Audio CD, 1998. Putumayo is the world music recording company known as much for its
colorful album covers, as for its eclectic collections from around
the globe. This collection of world music features female vocals
from cultures stretching from Scotland to Madagascar, accompanied by modern instrumentation with
high quality recording technology. Some of them are well known
recording artists within their countries and some are less known. No
two songs are alike.

Putumayo Presents "Music From the Coffee Lands", Audio CD, 1998. The theme which guided the selection of world music artists for this album
was that they come from countries which produce coffee. The result is an eclectic
set of pieces mostly from the Carribean, South America, and Africa. "Kothbiru",
by Ayub Ogada from Kenya, is a particular stand-out with its rich vocal tones and
nyatiti-plucking. Also available is the Ayub Ogada's 1993 release:
En Mana Kuoyo.

Speedy J - A Shocking Hobby", Audio CD, 2000. This is cutting edge European Electronica, beyond Techno. Speedy J is
a Rotterdam-based electronic musician, and we picked up his first album,
"Public Energy No. 1", on a trip to the Netherlands. "A Shocking Hobby" is his fourth album,
but the most direct follow-up stylistically to his widely acclaimed (at least
in electronica circles) first album from 1997. Unfortunately, there isn't much market
for this in the US, and "Public Energy No. 1" is not available here. "A
Shocking Hobby" is the next closest thing.

Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe 3, Audio CD, 2003. The Saint Germain Des Pres neighborhood in the Latin Quarter of Paris is known
as the Hippest Spot on Earth. This newest collection of European Jazz lives up to that
reputation, with cut after cut. We picked up number 2 of the series while
actually in this neighborhood, ordered number 1 when we got back to the US,
and now can't get enough.
